課程概述

This seminar is designed to provide a foundational overview of theories and research on mindfulness, with a focus on its relation to emotion regulation. Topics to be covered include forms of mindfulness and meditation, measurement of mindfulness, as well as the relation of mindfulness to cognitive functioning, emotion regulation, and self-related processes. Aside from weekly readings, seminar participants will engage in guided in-class activities and discussions. To help facilitate the development of mindfulness research, first-hand experience in mindfulness practice will be built into the course.

課程要求
1. Discussion Questions

Each week, students will submit two questions about one of the assigned articles. Please submit these questions onto the CEIBA discussion forum by noon on Thursdays and be prepared to share them in class. When writing your questions, please consider whether it will generate lively class discussion. Discussion questions may focus on relevant theories or methods, future research directions, or relationship to other research findings. Try to limit each question to a short paragraph. Please be thorough and remember to reference the readings assigned for that week. Each question will be graded based on clarity, coherence, relevance, and originality

2. Mindfulness Practice & Exercises

Beginning April 25th, students will be exposed to an 8-week program that is an outgrowth of the work that began in the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts, founded by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979. Students will have the opportunity to learn a variety of mindfulness techniques that each person can apply in their daily lives. In addition to in-class lessons, there will be weekly readings and homework assignments to enhance students’ learning. Details regarding the homework assignments will be provided in class. It is expected that students will attend each of the eight weekly sessions, a day-long retreat, and to practice the homework assignments for about 45 minutes most days of the week throughout the duration of this mindfulness training program.

3. In-Class Participation

Participation in class discussions counts! Students will earn up to 5 points each week for their contributions to class discussions.
